The Red
Room, the last of the rooms of the garden facade served as
Gotter’s work room. Its name is derived from the red textile wall covering
that was put up in the 19th century. In Gotter’s time the room was
probably set up as an architectural counterpart of the great hall.
Only a few specimens remain
from the 18th century. After Gotter’s period the ownership of
Molsdorf Palace frequently changed. The numerous owners lacked any sensibility
for the artistic jewel that remained for only a short time in each of their
hands. The valuable library for instance was already liquidated in the 19th
century. Quite a few paintings and inside objects were sold. Others were taken
away when the owners moved. After World War II for a time the palace was a home
for ethnic German repatriates and later a home for children. The occupants at
that time had no feeling for the heritage that for them had no use. Art does not
fill the stomach. None the less, it is fortunate that many objects of interest
remain. Most of the presently displayed material was brought in from museums
and other palaces where it had been stored.
